What is a nurse practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (ARNP) with advanced level training and education, that enables her to diagnose and treat medical problems for her patients. Nurse Practitioners offer some care that has in the past been offered only by physicians. NP education is based on lengthy clinical experience as a Registered Nurse, and adds 2 years of further education and clinical experience. A Masters Degree is becoming the standard for ARNPs around the country.

In Washington, Nurse Practitioners diagnose, order and interpret laboratory tests and X-rays, and can earn the right to prescribe medications. Like physicians NPs often specialize, providing care to maternal, neonatal, pediatric, gynecological, psychiatric and geriatric patients. A Family Nurse Practitioner offers care for patients throughout their life span.
